This was one of the more complex models I’ve sources and truly remixed it in a meaningful way. The primary difficulty was my lack of notes as I worked through the project. The original creator neglected to note on the deprecated WIP model that it was both archived in favor of the new one, and was only ever a work in progress.

I did end up finishing the project, which is an accomplishment by itself. I probably scrapped as much filament as I used, but that’s part of the hobby.

Other notables:

  • The original model(s) were in metric, and locally purchasing metric hardware in any quantity above 3 units is difficult. I converted much of it to metric, although not all of it.
  • The original model had no way to connect the receiver plate with the dovetail receiver. I used 15-min epoxy and it’s held up just fine.
  • Plaster of paris and ball bearings fill the center of the half-sphere. The unit (base, ball, and vise) weighs 3.3Lbs altogether.
