Stuff I’ve Made Out Of Wood

The Three Rules Wall-Hanger

In book 4 of the Bobiverse, Dennis E. Taylor writes about a distant star system that contains a species of platypus-like sentients called Quinlin. After much shenanigans, Bob-1 is speaking with a group while disguised as one of them, and ends up blowing his cover. One of the Quinlin is a philosophy buff, and Bob mentions our Golden Rule, meaning treat others as you’d like to be treated. To his chagrin, the Quinlin correct him, stating the three rules.

This resonated with me in a big way. The example Taylor gives in the novel is a vegetarian eating at an omnivore’s home. The meat-eater might love a steak-and-potatoes dinner, but the veggie wouldn’t, so treating each other how we’d like to be treated isn’t always ideal. If the host didn’t know the guest was vegetarian, then they can’t be expected to know that and fall back to the silver rules, which is why there’s more than one.

Nameplates for TS-Helpdesk Staff

While I know I could have asked and the school I work at would have had nameplates made for myself and a few colleagues that started since I joined the college 8-months ago, making wood engraved was both a way to show my appreciate for being a part of the team, and flex my maker skills

I used 8″x2″x.75″ pine slats for a few, and 8″x2″x1.3/8″ for most.

I printed the Wide Latin lettering out on shipping label stickers, cut them to fit, and stuck them to the wood, tracing the lettering out with an exacto knife. I then used my rotary tool to engrave out and undercut the lettering.

The lettering is painted satin black, top-coated with a super-gloss medium and the wood is stained with Minwax Gunstock ST 231 and sealed with Danish Oil varnish/protectant.

Bananas I Can’t Make Bread Out Of

Like Morty’s grandpa, I have a bad habit of developing catch-phrases, although I think (wishful thinking?) everyone does it to an extent.

I made this for my sister after using this phrase at least 3 times in a phone call

ADO Logo

My software development company’s logo, made physical. I was new to whittling at the time and had just finished an engraving project, so I decided to have the next project be a negative-engraving. The ADO letters are the foreground, and the remaining wood stock the background. The infinity symbol stylized into the logo is intentional, as CI/CD (Continuous Development/Continuous Integration) are the pillars of DevOps. That’s 2/3 of the name!

Better Than Yesterday, Not As Good As Tomorrow

Another catchphrase.

This was something I came up with, inspired by The Truman Show, to reply to people who ask “How’s it going?” when they mean to greet, “Hello”. I forget that most people don’t really care how it’s going, they either are acknowledging your existence in physical proximity to themselves, or want to tell you about their stuff. It’s way less cynical than it sounds.
